How I'm making my custom hood

I needed a custom hood to fit 2 lights for my 2 foot long tank, so I bought lengths of whitewood (that's what it says on the label) from Homebase last weekend.

They're long lengths of wood, about an inch thick, and various widths - 10cm, 15cm.

I sawed them to size using a hand saw, since I have no power saw, and I sanded all the pieces.

It will be in the style of juwel hoods. There will be a piece of wood across the middle of the top to screw the lights onto, and 2 flaps on either side secured using hinges.

So far I've made the rim of the hood. This shows the corners held together with corner braces.

This shows the whole thing so far. The thin stripes of wood on the inside are for holding the hood on top of the tank.

A few months ago I made a wooden hood primarily to fit in my new PC lighting. The construction of the base is similar to yours, although I did slope it. I was pleased with the design features I built in, Food/ lighting starter shelf at the back, a lid that fully raises and locks to allow full access to the tank etc. OK so far.

The lid was made with 10cm X 2cm boarding secured by 3 battons. I was aware of the fact that wood, heat and water are not a good combination so inside I primed/undercoated , put on 2 coats of white gloss and finished with 3 coats of polyuethane varnish. The outside was stained then finished with 3 coats of varnish.....................Not enough............Chinks of light started to show and it gradually got worse over the next few weeks. The top boards were taking on a curved shape. warp factor 5..................Beam me up Scottie (R.I.P.).

If I was to redo my project (and I may do when I get some free time) I would put a panel of material, possibly marine ply as the lid. The mechanics of my design failed because the heat created expansion, this expansion cracked the finish allowing moisture to penetrate the unvarnished edges of the boards. In fact if I could source it I would make one out of sheet aluminium.

I have a varnish that people use for waterproofing yachts, don't know what it's called though. I will be putting lots of coats on.

What sort of lights do you have Ian? I have 2 t8s with reflectors and I don't think they get that hot. I won't be storing the starter unit in the hood, as that does get hot.

A very nice hood so far, and I would say from the quality of your work you must have had a highly skilled assistant

    More updates

This is the stain I'll be using. It's more or less black. It won't match my stand though. My stand was custom made by some guy and it is the same colour as my hood before I varnish it. This is my tank with stand. The base that the tank sits on is bigger because the guy wasn't very good at being exact so I figured too big was better than too small.

This is the clear varnish. Since it's for yachts I figure it'd last:

I put L shaped braces on the corners as well as the corner braces to prevent the pieces from moving.

This shows the centre piece of wood that the lights will be fixed to.

This shows the underneath of that piece of wood, with a thin strip of wood to keep it in place:
